What the FNM?

Boatwater performs at WFNM & Stomping Grounds Punk Show

WFNM & Stomping Grounds
Punk Show

I went to the punk show expecting the same old crappy hardcore punk bands that usually show up at small venues. You know the type—the ones that sound like a bunch of drunk white kids playing Rancid covers (although nowadays I guess the angsty white kids play screamo or something). I really should have had more confidence in WFNM’s ability to bring in some good talented bands.

Boatwater
Boatwater started off the night and managed to blow any expectations I might have had right out of the…well, the water. Like the rest of the bands at the show, I would say Boatwater were more influenced by punk ideology and general aesthetic rather than the stereotypical punk sound. If I had to place them, I’d say they sounded more indie or even post-rock-influenced than anything (think Explosions in the Sky). Though Boatwater was not nearly as “together” as the other bands playing that night, I found them to be emotionally engaging in a way the others weren’t. I gotta admit, I had a soft spot for the violin that made an appearance. Read More

Artist Spotlight

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Pains of Being Pure at HeartThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart, natives of New York, played to a full house at Manhattan’s Webster Hall on October 3rd, 2009. Kip Berman, the band’s lead singer and guitar player, said as they took the stage, “I think this is going to be a special night.” This was around 9:15. The band played through about an hour’s worth of music from self-titled debut and EPs. These recording have already established The Pains of Being Pure at Heart as a noteworthy up-and-coming artist with a distinct sound and wide range of influences. Their music suggests any number of influences from Shoegaze to Britpop. They are reminiscent of artists such as My Bloody Valentine and The Smiths, especially when it comes to vocals. The singing of The Pains is handled mostly by Kip Berman and keyboardist Peggy Wang-East. Their vocals blend together, accentuating the lyrical quality of the music. Read More
